Seventeen-year-old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) moves from sunny Arizona to the gloomy town of Forks, Washington, where she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). She soon discovers that Edward and his family are vampires, and despite the danger, the two begin a powerful, forbidden romance that is threatened by a rival coven of nomadic, human-killing vampires.

This film launched a global phenomenon. While "strongly hated" by critics for "dull and wooden performances," "terrible" script, and "laughable" CGI, it was a box office smash that "set into furious motion" the YA-film trend of the 2010s. It is a "full-blown pop culture" touchstone.
