Based on Chazz Palminteri's one-man play, this coming-of-age story is set in the 1960s Bronx. It follows a young Italian-American boy, Calogero, who is torn between two father figures: his honest, hardworking bus driver father (De Niro) and a charismatic local mob boss, Sonny (Palminteri), whom he befriends.
Critics praised the film as a "very funny [and] very touching" debut for De Niro as a director, filled with "life and colorful characters". Roger Ebert gave it four stars, calling it a "sensitive work".
This is a modern classic and a staple of the gangster/crime drama genre. It's a fantastic story of loyalty, family, and choices. This Widescreen DVD is perfect for any collection.
The film's creation is legendary. Chazz Palminteri, a struggling actor, wrote the play based on his life and refused to sell the rights unless he could write the screenplay and play Sonny. De Niro agreed, making this his passion project.
